‘BEEN THERE, SEEN THAT, GOT THE T-SHIRT’ – JULIAN VOGEL ON THE SLOGAN T-SHIRT
Our creative director, Julian Vogel contributed to Stephanie Talbot’s latest book, ‘Slogan T-Shirts: Cult & Culture’ with his take on using the slogan t-shirt as a marketing tool. Julian discusses the ‘cult of the T-shirt’. He describes how particularly during the 1980s and early 1990s the T-shirt developed into a powerful means of communication; pointing to Katherine Hamnett’s early utilisation of this platform an example. He goes on to consider the potential the garment has to be at times vulgar and at times an equalizer. “So, as a functioning garment it’s very versatile and in a way that versatility has to be part of why it’s become such a cult item.”
“Featuring interviews with a wealth of credible fashion insiders, cultural commentators and creative luminaries, from Holly Johnson (of Frankie Goes to Hollywood) to Katherine Hamnett, [Talbot’s book] offers a multi-faceted approach to the question of what makes the slogan T-shirt so rich, layered and culturally relevant”
