ANTONI & ALISON
Antoni Burakowski and Alison Roberts met at St. Martin’s School of Art in 1982 whilst studying Fashion and Fine Art respectively. When they were students they shared a Council flat in Borough and, after leaving college, it was in this flat that they founded the ‘Antoni and Alison’ label in October 1987 with their ‘Be Happy’ collection.
Starting with only £200 in 1987, Antoni and Alison have always managed to be a self-financed, self-supported independent company. Their work ethic and motto is ‘Work Very Hard’ and they have always done so.
For 20 years Antoni and Alison have had a more ‘Art Studio’ than a typical ‘Fashion Studio’ slant. They do not follow trends, but are always striving for the ultimate ‘good idea’ and aim to mark each season in an innovative and modern way. As a result, Antoni and Alison have affected, as well as being part of, the developments within fashion design and designer perception over the past 20 years.
When they first met, Antoni and Alison were compelled to work together. Although exact opposites in personality – they refer to themselves as plain (Alison) and fancy (Antoni) – they maintain their joint vision to produce both simple and complex clothing collections with a ‘zip up and go’ philosophy.
As a small British design company, they have worked on ranges and product design in Japan and on the British High Street. Their film works and photography have been exhibited world-wide in galleries and museums and their creative shows continued to break new ground each season.
